BAS National Alpaca Show 2014

Monday 17th of March 2014

I can honestly say that I am really proud to have been a member of the BAS 2014 National Show committee. We have all worked so hard over the past few months often putting our own business interests, friends and families on the back burner. But what a show we produced!

For a variety of reasons, the BAS National Show was non-existent for a few years. It was resurrected in 2013 in a slightly different format which suited some people and not others. Our committee, chaired by Barbara Hetherington, decided to go back to basics and stage a professional halter and fleece show with British judges and Australian judge, Jenny Jackson. Our aim was to have a professional but fun show which was accessible to all breeders across the UK. I organised the seminar programme which covered everything from website design, producing alpaca cloth and marketing, through to seminars on alpaca skin problems, pasture management and alpaca nutrition. I was also responsible for the Fibre Zone, which show-cased alpaca yarns, fabrics and knitwear.

Naturally, Mike and I took five of our alpacas to the show. Once again, our show team did really well. They all won rosettes, which was incredible, given the fact that they were all in the most fiercely competitive white and fawn classes and we were up there with the largest breeders in the UK. We might only have a small herd here at Fallowfield, but we have some top class genetics within that herd.
